Gladstone 200 Campaign

Throughout 2009, we remembered the birth of William Gladstone two hundred years ago on December 29th 1809. The Gladstone 200 Campaign is one of the ways in which this anniversary continues to be celebrated.

Gladstone Reading

The Gladstone family along with the staff and trustees of St Deiniol’s Library are convinced that if Gladstone were alive today, his main concern would be the lack of understanding between Christians and Muslims. We have, therefore, decided that the principal aim of the Gladstone 200 Campaign will be to build and resource an Islamic Reading Room at St Deiniol’s which will enable Christians and others to reach a deeper understanding of Islam and its place in the contemporary world. We want to increase the depth and scope of the collection so that it is a useful resource for Islamic scholars as well.

The Gladstone 200 campaign has an overall goal of £1.25 million. Its aims are to:

  • Build a new Reading Room focusing on Islamic Studies ((£500,000)
  • Build a Resource Centre for Religious Education and Research (£250,000)
  • Enhance and supplement our existing Islamic Collection and Religious Education material (£100,000)
  • Provide the salary of an Assistant Librarian for five years (£150,000)
  • Support the Library’s commitment to training graduate librarians for five years (£100,000)
  • Refurbish bedrooms, providing en-suite facilities (£150,000)
