Gladstone Festival

St Deiniol's Library will be holding its annual Gladstone Festival from Thursday 9th - Sunday 12th September.

Thursday 9th September (8.00 p.m.)

Edward Jenner – Hero or Anti-Hero?

A talk by Gareth Williams, Professor of Medicine at the University of Bristol, to mark the publication of his latest book Angel of Death. Researched in part at St Deiniol’s Library, this book offers fascinating new insights into the fight against smallpox. Tickets: £5.

Friday 10th September (6.00 p.m.)

Awarding of Gladstone Prizes to pupils of local schools with readings by children’s poet, Steve Turner. There is no charge for this event but please book your place in advance as seating is limited.

Steve Turner began writing poetry at the age of 16. He wrote four books for adults before the publication of his first book for children (The Day I Fell Down The Toilet) in 1996. His work has appeared in numerous anthologies of children’s poetry and has been read on Radio 2, Radio 5 and the Disney Channel. His poems are challenging, entertaining, thought provoking and fun and are loved by children, teachers and parents alike.

Saturday 11th September

Annual Friends Lecture by Elizabeth Davey (10.30 a.m.)

There is no charge for the Lecture but please book your place in advance as seating is limited.

Unveiling of statue of Wisdom on the Library lawn (3.30 p.m.) There is no charge for this event but afternoon tea may be purchased afterwards in the Coffee Shop.

Tom Waugh is a sculptor and architectural stone carver based in Somerset. He trained at the City and Guilds of London Art School and has been the recipient of scholarships from the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust and the Princes Foundation. Tom has worked on a number of important public buildings including St Paul’s Cathedral, St Martin-in-the-Fields and St George’s Chapel, Windsor. The statue will join the four stone benches which were carved by Tom last year.

Festival Dinner (7.30 p.m.) Tickets: £25 for non residents.

Sunday 12th September

Open Doors: As part of European Heritage Days in Wales, the Library will be open from 2.00 – 5.00 p.m. for guided tours and cream teas.

Visit for Library residents to the Temple of Peace – Gladstone’s study at Hawarden Castle.

Festal Evensong in St Deiniol’s Church with the Chapel Choir of Abbey Gate College (6.00 p.m.)

Since its formation in 1983, the Chapel Choir of Abbey Gate College has sung at a number of prestigious venues at home and abroad including the cathedrals of Cologne, Aachen, Salisbury, Wells and Chester as well as Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, St. George’s Chapel, Windsor and St Mark’s, Venice.

Preacher: Peter Francis, Warden of St Deiniol’s Library.

Festival Supper (7.00 p.m.) Tickets: £10 for non residents.

The following all-inclusive packages are available but we are happy to supply other rates on request including non-residential rates for individual events.

Thursday – Sunday (4 nights)                             £250.00 per person

Saturday – Sunday (2 nights)                              £155.00 per person

Saturday only                                                       £80.00 per person

The above rates include overnight accommodation in a standard room on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis with lunch, tea/coffee, cake/biscuits and tickets for relevant events. These rates do not include en-suite supplements (£12.00 per room per night), telephone calls, wine (except for Festival Dinner) or drinks from the Gladstone Room bar.
