Book Launch to celebrate Gladstone’s Library inspired book

Gladstone’s Library in Hawarden is holding a book launch event for award-winning crime writer Martin Edwards this month. ‘The Hanging Wood’ is Martin’s fifteenth crime fiction book and has been inspired by a visit to Gladstone’s Library. Martin Edwards launched his last book ‘The Serpent Pool’ at the Library and it was while visiting that he became inspired by the idea of setting his next novel in a residential library.
“Gladstone’s Library regularly provides authors and researchers with a relaxing and calming location for their work, but on this occasion it has actually been woven into a plot” says Peter Francis, Warden at the Library. “Martin had many questions for us when he last visited about the workings of the library and its attributes, although he assures us that none of the characters bear any resemblance to the staff, readers or residents of the Library!”
‘The Hanging Wood’ is the fifth in Martin Edwards’ series of Lake District Mysteries featuring Detective Chief Inspector Hannah Scarlett and the historian Daniel Kind. “I was working on this book at the time the fourth book in the series, ‘The Serpent Pool’, was launched at Gladstone’s Library” Martin explains. “The place entranced me – a wonderful haven of peace, history and learning with a unique atmosphere. The imagination of a crime writer is strange and unpredictable, and it was not long before I started wondering if a residential library might have potential as a setting for a murder mystery. Within a few days, I figured out how such a location might play a part in the new Lake District story I was working on.”
His earlier titles have included ‘The Coffin Trail’, which was short-listed for the Theakston’s prize for best British crime novel of 2006; ‘The Cipher Garden’, and ‘The Arsenic Labyrith’ which was short-listed for the Lakeland Book of the Year award in 2008. Aside from his writing, Martin is currently a partner in a Liverpool law firm and he published various legal articles and textbooks before turning his hand to crime fiction.
During the event Martin will give a talk about his inspiration for the book and his research which helped him to create the setting of his fictional residential library in Keswick and he will be available to sign copies of his new book as well as his previous titles. The book launch is taking place on Thursday 28 July at 8pm at Gladstone’s Library.
