Close-up on the Bible

Here you can see pictures of this 1655 copy of the King James Bible. The binder’s title designates it as ‘The Book’ and it is bound in black leather with gilt-edged, engraved paper. It also includes an engraved title page which includes the full title ‘The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament and the New: Newly translated out of the original tongues: and with the former translations diligently compared and revised by His Majesties speciall commandment. Appointed to be read in churches.’ As you can see from the picture of Luke 23:32 marginal comments were included in the King James Bible, often referencing other passages of the Bible, in this case 1 Peter 4.17 and Matthew 27.38.
